I have been painting for some time and liked what I was making. Then something happened - I could not paint like before any more.
I couldn't get rid of anything, I was getting lost in details, because they were absolutely, absolutely beautiful details.
Then Maydan and the War started in Ukraine. Since the Fall 2013 we call it “the War”.
These unresolved composition challenges seemed unimportant compare to the art of artillery. I did not paint for a year.
It was nothing but reading the news, sticking to internet. I was leaving the screen in worst mood than I started to stare on it.
To paint something seemed ridiculous for what I felt inside was horror. Then one day I red a post where it was written:
"stop panicking – do what you can do the best – that is how you can help in this War”. I came to studio and painted first of my
war diaries the way, I newer painted before – painted without judging myself , for that was not important. Then I was painting
one or two pieces a day, and people where telling me – we want happy pictures. Each time I would try happy picture,
something would happened in the War, and emotional respond would overwhelm the happy picture.
It was the massacre in Kenya. I have prepared pink canvas for long waiting series inspired by two days of summer leisure at
friends cottage on a lake. People, Lake, Forest . They were done numerous sketches.
The task was coming through difficulties – one element
was taking over the other. I thought to try it again. But Garissa has happened. There it was a photo in a media where 40 students
were killed. It was not important what was the color of cloths they were wearing on a moment of their death, nor the lighting, no
the perspective - scale - composition. It was only important that they were alive and now they are dead.
I came back to lake scenes and painted: people - red, lake - blue, grass – green, tree trunks – black. People, above all, are fragile
bodies of blood and they easily can be killed. Water is blue, grass is green, tree trunks are black.
